Development
1. Development Direction
(1) To meet the purpose of specialty and diversification, we will establish the cross-regional multi-disciplinary curriculum framework, and employ multi-cultural faculty, thus accumulating the influential reputation in academic research at home and abroad. We will also make every effort to strengthen the teaching quality based on appropriate student-faculty ratio, thus allowing our students to select a diversity of specialized courses according to their study plans.
(2) We will actively strive for research projects and grant-in-aid schemes both inside and outside of the NTNU, improve the research capabilities of the faculty, achieve the mutual support between solid research and teaching, divide “culture and its application” and “political economy and regional development” into two academic groups, provide results of prospective and feasibility studies, fulfill social responsibilities, and cultivate junior researchers.
(3) To enhance global mobility, our department will focus on students’ foreign language proficiency. Other than some pan-English lectures, we also offer Japanese language and Korean language lessons. We encourage students to attend lessons in Malay language, Thai language and Vietnamese language that are offered by NTNU. Furthermore, there are foreign language proficiency tests for students before graduation, which are expected to guide the learning direction of students.
(4) In view of the national and social development needs and in accordance with the development of key policies, we will proactively cooperate with related departments of universities at home and broad, agencies and institutions in Taiwan and the whole world by cooperating with the implementation of main policies. We have started to offer the Ph. D. Program in 2017 (Academic Year 106), which not only provide training courses for students who would be engaged in academic research in the future but also enhance the basic and practical application ability of students under the Undergraduate Program, and strengthen the capacity of students under Master Program to perform research independently.
(5) We will make an active effort to be in line with international practice, strive to conclude cooperation and exchange programs with world renowned universities, attract international students, experts and scholars so as to enhance the international reputation of this department, and at the same time, strengthen the influence of this department among the related academic communities at home and abroad with the intention of taking on the academic leadership role.
(6) We will focus on local research and practice, cultivate students to be influential in the society and to offer assistance to people using their professional knowledge and capacities, and accumulate the teamwork experience, and then proceed to implement the idea of “global vision, local practice”.
2. Development Priority:
The vision of this department is to become the focal point for all topics concerning humanistic and social sciences in East Asia, to develop itself as a key location for regional research and teaching, to nurture students so that they will be equipped with the basic capacity to work independently in the areas of culture & application and political economy & regional development.
(1) In the short term, we will make “culture and its application” and “political economy and regional development” in East Asia the development priority. We will set different educational goals for the Undergraduate Program, Master Program, and Ph. D. Program, and draw up a comprehensive program for the relevant courses. We will establish research centers with specific themes to promote the development in the related fields.
(2) In the medium term, we will establish special-topic research centers and utilize the research results to create databases for various topics. We aim to cultivate professional research talents and collaborate with world-renowned universities to set up the “dual degrees system” and establish mutually recognized courses. Meanwhile, we will continue to run the high-profile Taiwan Journal of East Asian Studies and integrate the research results in different fields.
(3) In the long term, we aim to become the academic leader in Taiwan and East Asia, to cultivate the competitive talents based on theoretical research and local practice, to establish a comprehensive theoretical research and practice system, and to provide advices and opinions on the future development direction of the country.
◆ Summaries:
1. In terms of teaching staff, this department pays equal attention to teaching, researching, and servicing, with the expectations that teachers’ specialization in learning and cultivation can be in line with the trends of the times. It is also the mission of this department to ensure that university professors take on the role of public intellectuals.
2. In terms of cultivating students, this department aims to cultivate excellent professional talents who have capacity for independent thinking, positive enterprising spirit, active responsible approaches, excellent teamwork spirits, international macroscopic vision and excellent moral culture.
3. In terms of course design, this department focuses on analytical investigation on the related scope in East Asia; improves the professional knowledge and capacity of students in cultures, and political economy of East Asia; provides academic foundation and practical knowledge required for development of political economy and internationalization; emphasizes on the training and demands of the Chinese language in order to strengthen the competitive capacity of students, in addition to meeting the requirements to obtain higher education and employment.
4. In terms of academic research and practical application, the research covers sinology from East Asia to the whole world, history, culture, ideologies, politics, economy and trade of East Asia and other related topics; focuses on observation of the East Asia region; emphasizes on cultivating the capacity to collect, analyze and apply information on international sinology, East Asian culture and ideology as well as international politics and businesses. Related activities are also held to boost the internationalization degree and reputation of this department at home and abroad, as well as to promote the information and technology exchange among the industry, government, and academia.
