About
The Department of East Asian Studies is affiliated with the College of International Studies and Social Sciences, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), located at Cheng Building 9F, NTNU Main Campus, Heping E. Rd., Taipei City. The Department of East Asian Culture and Development and the Graduate Institute of International Sinology Studies were consolidated into the Department of East Asian Studies in Academic Year 2011, which enrolled students into the undergraduate and master’s programs for “the sinology and culture group” and “the politics and economics group”. The Graduate Institute of Political Science merged with this department in Academic Year 2015, and this department has started to enroll students into the doctoral program in Academic Year 2017, thus achieving a complete coverage of program offerings from Undergraduate Programs, Master's Degree Programs to Ph. D. Programs.
Beginning from the Academic Year 2018, in order to further cultivate cross-disciplinary professional talents, especially those majoring in Northeast Asia, China, Southeast Asia and surrounding countries, the Department of East Asian Studies made changes to the original grouping recruitment system, focusing instead on the integration of multiple disciplines, with “culture and its application” and “political economy and regional development” as the centerpiece subjects. Our undergraduate program aims to cultivate all-round talents in humanistic society field, and award graduates with Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees. Master's Degree Programs aim to cultivate professional talents with independent research and practical capacity, and award graduates with Master of Social Science (M.S.S.) degrees. Ph. D. Programs aim to cultivate professional talents majoring in senior humanities and social studies, and award graduates with Doctor of Social Sciences (Ph.D.) degrees.
To date, there are 19 full-time faculty in this department, with 9 professors, 9 associate professors and 1 assistant professor, with expertise in the fields of sinology, history, literature, cultural study, international relationship, political science, cross-strait research, finance and economics of East Asia, who can provide students at different educational stages with necessary knowledge and career development.
The Department of East Asian Studies is the only such department of universities in Taiwan offering a complete educational system from undergraduate, master to doctor majoring in East Asian studies. It has developed to be the teaching research unit for multi-disciplinary integrated professional talents and has been dedicated to providing systematical academic training to students majoring in East Asian studies. At the same time, the Department of East Asian Studies has established an exchange program with renowned foreign universities in Europe, America, Japan, Korea and many Southeast Asian countries offering courses in East Asian studies.
[Academic Research]
Full-time faculty in this department possesses excellent educational experiences, abundant research capacity and high academic reputation, with the research topics covering cultural ideology & application, political economy & regional development. They have also presided over research projects subsidized by Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST, 科技部) and their related collaboration with the industries. These researches have achieved fruitful results as well as attained first class standard in Taiwan.
[Internationalization]
The faculty in this department comes from diversified background. We also have Japanese and Korean teachers. Collectively, they provide students with complete teaching contents. Meanwhile, this department encourages students in the Undergraduate Program and Master Program to participate in the exchange program to East Asia, Europe and America so as to broaden their international perspective. Also, in view of the high percentage of foreign students in this department, students are able to learn cross-cultural differences from each other.
2. Course Features
Our educational goal is to cultivate cross-disciplinary talents for regional application and research course. The course covers two fields, i.e. “culture and its application” and “political economy and regional development.” The course features for each program are as below:
[Undergraduate Program]
Our Undergraduate Program aims to cultivate all-round talents in the humanistic field by offering courses that cover “culture and its application” and “political economy and regional development” as well as providing Japanese language and Korean language lessons in order to achieve cross-regional and cross-disciplinary goals. Meanwhile, course resources from the Southeast Asian languages studies of the NTNU are also introduced to provide students with cross-cultural understanding, basic knowledge, capability and perspective on East Asia. The courses include Introduction to East Asian Culture, East Asian Cultural Heritage, Introduction to East Asian Sinology, Theory and Practice of East Asian Regional Research, Cultural Policies in East Asian Countries and Simulation Practice of East Asian Political Economy.
[Master's Program]
Our Master Program aims to cultivate professional research talents with independent thinking and research capacity. The Program is featured with wide-range research fields, diverse faculty, and courses covering “culture and its application” and “political economy and regional development.” Along with the increasingly diversification of current regional research projects and the gradual recognition on cross-disciplinary talents, students tend to select preferred courses with significant extent and depth, regardless of their research interests in areas such as East Asian culture and thoughts, cultural creativity and application, East Asian political economy and cross-strait relations, globalization and governance.
[Ph. D. Programs]
The Ph. D. Program aims to cultivate senior academic researchers with core courses that strengthen the cross-disciplinary quality and provide solid training on regional research. The Program targets at developing East Asian research and teaching features by focusing on two main areas, i.e. “culture and its application” and “political economy and regional development.” In terms of the course content design, the Program emphasizes 4 targets, namely, vision in East Asia, local practice, cross-regional integration and critical thinking, with the mission to cultivate senior academic talents equipped with theories, practical experience and globalization.

(1) Become academic researchers in research institutes or think tanks specializing in sinology of East Asia, cultural application, political economy & regional development.
(2) Become administrative staff or public servants in governmental organs such as foreign affairs, culture, political economy, overseas Chinese affairs, and national development.
(3) Become professional journalists, editors, tourism operators, marketing personnel, corporate planning personnel, and professional managers.
(4) Become professional diplomatic translators or interpreters of Japanese, Korean, English or European languages.
